English language teaching in a non-native environment has experienced a variety of obstacles, one of which is the interference of English learners’ mother tongue. The impediment is doubled when English is taught in a multi-lingual environment like Vietnam, (...)

Nonlinear vibration of thick FGM plates on elastic foundation subjected to thermal and mechanical loads using the first-order shear deformation plate theory

This paper presents an analytical approach to investigate the nonlinear dynamic response and vibration of thick functionally graded material (FGM) plates using both of the first-order shear deformation plate theory and stress function with full motion equations (not using Volmir’s assumptions). The FGM plate is assumed to rest on elastic foundation and subjected to mechanical, thermal, and damping loads. Numerical results for dynamic response of the FGM plate are obtained by Runge–Kutta method. The results show the material properties, the elastic foundations, mechanical and thermal loads on the nonlinear dynamic response of functionally graded plates.

Torsional buckling and post-buckling behavior of eccentrically stiffened functionally graded toroidal shell segments surrounded by an elastic medium

The nonlinear buckling and post-buckling problems of functionally graded stiffened toroidal shell segments surrounded by an elastic medium under torsion based on an analytical approach are investigated. The rings and stringers are attached to the shell, and material properties of the shell are assumed to be continuously graded in the thickness direction. The classical shell theory with the geometrical nonlinearity in von Kármán sense and the smeared stiffeners technique are applied to establish theoretical formulations. The three-term approximate solution of deflection is chosen more correctly, and the explicit expression to find critical load and post-buckling torsional load-deflection curves is given. The effects of geometrical parameters and the effectiveness of stiffeners on the stability of the shell are investigated.

Wetting effect on optical sum frequency generation (SFG) spectra of D-glucose, D-fructose, and sucrose

(Graph Presented) We report a sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy study of D-glucose, D-fructose and sucrose in the C-H stretching vibration regime. Wetting effect on the SFG spectra was investigated. The SFG spectrum of D-glucose changed from that of α-D-glucose into those of α-D-glucose monohydrate by wetting. The SFG spectra showed evidence of a small change of β-D-fructopyranose into other anomers by wetting. SFG spectra of sucrose did not change by wetting. Assignments of the vibrational peaks in the SFG spectra of the three sugars in the dry and wet states were performed in the C-H stretching vibration region near 3000 cm-1.

Nonlinear buckling of higher deformable S-FGM thick circular cylindrical shells with metal-ceramic-metal layers surrounded on elastic foundations in thermal environment

An analytical approach on the nonlinear response of thick functionally graded circular cylindrical shells with temperature independent material property surrounded on elastic foundations subjected to mechanical and thermal loads is presented. Material properties are graded in the thickness direction according to a Sigmoid power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of constituents (S-FGM). The formulations are based on the third order shear deformation shell theory taking into account von Karman nonlinearity, initial geometrical imperfection and Pasternak type elastic foundation. By applying Galerkin method and using stress function, explicit relations of thermal load-deflection curves of the S-FGM shells are determined. Detailed parametric studies are carried out to investigate effects of volume fraction index, material properties and geometrical shapes, axial compressions and thermal load, foundation stiffness and imperfection on nonlinear buckling behaviors…
